 training to work in their communities. Each candidate
makes three rotations through Upper Valley Hospital’s various departments to understand basic work skills and self-management. Graduates of the program have been placed at Fair Haven, Emerson Climate Technologies, Everyday Manufacturing, The Spot, Bob Evans, and NAPA Auto Parts.

Edison Community College whose story is featured in the introduction to this section. Edison is a two-year college celebrating 44 years of providing learning opportunities that enable and empower citizens, commerce, and communities in Darke, Miami, and Shelby Counties.
Edison offers more than 40 associate degrees in a number of majors including accounting, fine arts, biology, business management, communication, computer information technology, criminal justice, early childhood education, economics, electronics engineering technology, English, equipment maintenance technology, geology and earth science, history, industrial management, mathematics, mechanical engineering technology, medical or clinical laboratory technology, nursing, office systems, paralegal studies, philosophy, psychology, physical therapy, social services, and telecommunications.
The college also offers one-year certificate programs
in key career fields and Fast Track programs that provide a
set of job skills for those seeking new career opportunities. Students can earn certification in such high-demand areas
as accounting, real estate, human resources management, computer languages, CIT, automation and robotics, electronics networking, renewable energy technology, HVAC-R, supply chain management, CAD, programming, medical coding, paralegal, and phlebotomy. Edison continues to add more and more online, web-enhanced, and flex course offerings to meet the needs of a varied student population. Edison also provides the college credit and support for the College Credit Plus offerings of many area high schools.
Many students save on college costs by beginning
their studies at Edison, earning an associate degree, and transferring to another college or university to finish their four-year degree. “The 2+2 University Transfer” degrees provided by Edison are the gateway to over 250 bachelor’s degrees at Ohio public and private universities, as well as to colleges across the United States. Several colleges offer on-line options for finishing four-year degrees in certain majors.
Many four-year colleges are located within an hour’s drive of Shelby County including the University of Dayton, Wright State University, the Lima branch of The Ohio State University, Ohio Northern University, Bluffton University, and Urbana University.
Another educational option for area residents is the Wright State University Lake Campus located in Celina in nearby Mercer County. The Agriculture and Water Quality Center at the Lake Campus provides classroom space for its growing Agriculture program and research laboratories to study water quality at nearby Grand Lake St. Marys and other waterways in the region. The agriculture curriculum includes courses in animal science, animal health, nutrient management, and agricultural finance.
